British-manufactured Women’s Activewear Brand, YANA Active, secures pop-up shop in John Lewis Leeds

In what’s arguably the toughest time to be in retail with the pandemic having a huge impact on the high street – only further proven by the announcement of Arcadia going into administration yesterday– some brands are tackling the downturn head on.

A North East business founded by sisters and business partners Sophie and Charlotte Wilson have secured a pop-up shop in Leeds John Lewis this week.

The sister-duo founded YANA Active in December 2019 to empower women by designing and manufacturing high-quality, activewear which can be worn to work out or relax in.

In a year when the country went into lockdown, YANA turned their efforts to supporting their local community. The YAY! (YANA and YOU) campaign launched, creating content for their community of ‘Everyday Warriors’ to engage with from their homes. The aim was to keep people fit and their minds stimulated, especially as mental health issues have been on the increase due to people isolating. YANA’s activewear was also donated to Newcastle Women’s Aid (NWA), a competition was run in aid of NWA raising £510 and a raffle for Teesside Hospice at their mini launch in August raised £85.

After a year of cancelled events due to the pandemic where YANA planned to showcase their first collection, they have worked hard to secure a pop-up shop with retail giant John Lewis.

“The vision for YANA was always to provide women with functional and beautiful activewear that won’t let them down, whilst creating an inclusive, yet exclusive community via YANA’s blog and social media channels. We bring like-minded women together to empower one another” said YANA Co-Founder Charlotte Wilson.

YANA Active’s products are all designed in-house by co-founder Charlotte, manufactured in the North East and their leggings contain specialist technology that helps to reduce the appearance of cellulite. This will be YANA’s second John Lewis Pop-up shop following a week-long shop in October half-term in the Newcastle store.

“Our first year in business hasn’t been as we expected and planned due to Covid-19. We’ve seen our community suffer and the high street suffer crumble to Covid-19 so for us to secure a pop-up shop in a nation-wide retailer with a fantastic reputation is a huge achievement. It is exactly the opportunity YANA needed during a year which has been very difficult to launch a start-up” said YANA co-founder Sophie Wilson.

YANA Active will have a pop-up stall on the first floor in John Lewis Leeds branch from Thursday 3rd December to Sunday 6th December 2020.
